Asia Argento is an Italian actress and film maker who was born into a large household. She has pursued both professions herself. She first made her debut in film when she was nine years old in the film of Sergio Citti, Sogni bisogni. At the age of eighteen she had become the main character of Cristina Comencini's Zoo and part of Michele Soavi's The Church. Red Wood Pigeon, the film in which she starred as Nanni Moretti's young daughter, came out a year after. But it was Close Friends by Michele Placido that made Asia's acting career explode. It was well received in the Cannes International Film Festival. Daria Nicolodi is Argento's most favorite actress and was portrayed as a teenage anorexic searching for her parents murderer in Trauma. Asia's intense way of performing was well used in the film Condannato a nozze. The year 1993 was the first time she costarred in the film of Carlo Verdones, Perdiamoci di vista where she performed the role of Arianna an athlete. This role was complex and demanding, earning her an award from David di Donatello as best actress. In 1995, she was a co-star together with Michel Piccoli on Peter Del Monte's Compagna di viaggio. This collaboration was rewarded with a David di Donatello award as well as the Grolla d'oro. Asia started directing in the year 1994 and released two short films and an episode from the film De Generazione. In 1996, she produced a documentary about her father. She also produced AbelAsia, a film on the legendary director Abel Ferrara. In 1998, Asia directed AbelAsia, which was awarded by the Rome Film Festival. Asia was the director of her first feature in Scarlet Diva (1999), in which she was the actress leading the film and also the creator of its screenplay. In May of 2000, the film was released throughout the world. The film was honoured at the Williamsburg Festival of Brooklyn, New York.
